Understanding BCAAs and Hydration Powders: A Sports Nutritionist’s Perspective

Understanding BCAAs and Hydration Powders: A Sports Nutritionist’s Perspective

When it comes to health and wellness, it’s common to come across supplements you’re not quite sure about. And honestly, we don’t blame you! The supplement world is always evolving, with new trends popping up and disappearing almost overnight.

Performance supplements, like BCAAs and hydration powders (also referred to as electrolytes), can be particularly confusing. With all the rules about what to take, when to take it, and whether you even need it, it’s no wonder people feel overwhelmed.

That’s why we asked Sports Nutritionist Ange (@athleticcoachinghub) to break down our reformulated BCAAs and Electrolyte Powders, so you can use them with confidence and know exactly how they fit into your training and recovery routine.

WHY IS THERE A NEW FORMULA?

At Happy Way, we’re always looking for ways to level up our products so you can keep living your best life. This combined with the latest research inspired us to relaunch our BCAAs and Electrolyte formulas so we can make them even more effective and backed by evidence.

Our updated BCAAs formula contains higher amounts of key amino acids such as leucine, isoleucine and valine. This balanced 2:1:1 ratio is scientifically designed to help ease muscle soreness, support recovery after workouts and maintain energy during longer or more demanding sessions.

We’ve also packed our new Hydration blend with key minerals such as magnesium, sodium and potassium to replenish what you lost when you sweat. It’s also made with South Australian salt from Lake Lochiel and carefully balanced to support hydration without going overboard. Since most adults already get plenty of sodium through their daily diet, this amount is both safe and effective for supporting performance.

WHAT ARE BCAAs?

BCAAs (short for branched-chain amino acids) are three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. They’re part of the building blocks of muscle, which is why they’ve become so popular in the sports nutrition space. People are usually drawn to BCAAs because of their link to muscle growth and recovery, especially leucine.

But here’s the part that often gets overlooked: BCAAs are still just amino acids — the same ones you get from the protein in your food. That means how much protein you eat throughout the day really matters when deciding if BCAAs will be helpful. It’s not an “either/or” situation — it’s about how BCAAs can fit alongside your overall nutrition to support your training and recovery.

WHAT DOES EVIDENCE SAY ABOUT BCAAs?

Research suggests that:

  • BCAAs can increase muscle protein synthesis compared to placebo.
  • Some studies show reduced muscle soreness, mostly with resistance training.
  • Some people feel less fatigued or more comfortable during sessions.

Most of the benefits seen with BCAAs show up when protein intake is on the lower side.As protein intake becomes more consistent, the extra benefit of BCAAs tends to be smaller, simply because the body already has what it needs to recover and adapt.

WHEN ARE BCAAs USEFUL?

BCAAs may make sense in your routine if you:

  • Train fasted or with long gaps between meals.
  • Have a low appetite or stomach issues around training.
  • Struggle to consistently hit protein targets.
  • Have longer sessions where sipping is easier than eating.
  • Follow a plant-based diet and find it hard to hit leucine per meal.

In these cases, BCAAs can support training without replacing food. For people who value taste, routine and convenience, supplementing with a BCAA powder can be a simple way to support sessions when eating isn’t possible, alongside a well balanced diet.

WHY DOES HYDRATION MATTER WHEN TRAINING?

When you train in hot conditions, your body has to work harder to keep your core temperature down. Blood gets redirected to the skin, sweat rate increases and your heart works overtime just to keep up.

It’s important to know that sweat loss isn’t just water. You’re losing fluid and electrolytes, especially sodium.  If that’s not replaced, blood volume drops, heart rate rises and performance can suffer.

WHAT IS HYDRATION POWDER?

Hydration is our fun, easy-to-remember name for electrolytes because that’s exactly what it’s designed to do: help keep you hydrated!

After really hot or intense sessions, plain water isn’t always enough and that’s where something like Happy Way’s new Daily Hydration Powder comes to the rescue. It contains key electrolytes like sodium, potassium and magnesium to help with fluid absorption and muscle function.

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE HYDRATION POWDER?

Now, do you need this every single day? Short answer: probably not. A lot of people get enough sodium from food alone, even many athletes with high training loads.

Electrolytes are most helpful in specific situations, like:

  • Sessions over an hour at higher intensity.
  • Training or working in hot conditions with heavy sweat loss.
  • Prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Certain medical conditions affecting fluid balance.

If that’s you and that’s your daily reality, then using something like Happy Way's Hydration Powder more regularly can make a lot of sense.

THE FINAL TAKEAWAY

At the end of the day, supplements like BCAAs and hydration powders are just tools. When you understand what they do and when they actually make sense, it’s much easier to use them in a way that supports your daily routine. When you use them alongside a balanced diet, they don’t have to be confusing or overcomplicated (plus when it comes to Happy Way you can always trust you’re getting the best quality!).
