Let’s face it, Summer just hits differently. The days feel longer, your social calendar is always packed and there’s always a reason to gather. Whether it’s a BBQ, a picnic or a spontaneous dinner that goes way past your bedtime. Summer naturally brings everyone together, and when it does, food isn’t far behind.
From shared platters to festive drinks and late night dessert runs, so many of our favourite summer moments are woven around what you're eating or what's on your plate. Which is exactly why this time of year can feel both joyful and, at times, a little overwhelming when you’re also trying to prioritise your health and wellness goals.
The good news? You don’t have to choose between the two. We asked Women’s Health Dietitian Emma Kreig (@emmakreignutrition) to share her favourite tips and tricks to help you socialise all summer long while still feeling nourished, energised and confident in your body.
1. Bring a Nourishing Platter to Share
One of the easiest ways to feel confident at social events is to bring a plate of something you know will make you feel good.
Think olives, quality cheese, seed crackers, hummus, cherry tomatoes, sliced vegetables, fresh or dried fruit, and even protein balls (keep scrolling for Emma’s go-to protein ball recipe!). Not only does this add colour and variety to the table, but it also ensures there are antioxidant-rich, fibre-packed and protein-containing options available.
This isn’t about being “the healthy one” at the party. It’s about expanding the spread and options so you can enjoy the festivities while still honouring your body and goals.
Want a simple protein ball recipe? Here’s Emma’s go-to base for protein balls!
Ingredients
- 150g raw, unsalted almonds
- 3 tbsp your choice of Happy Way Protein Powder
- 200g pitted dates (soak for 20 minutes in hot water)
- 3 tbsp chia seeds
- 3 tbsp almond butter
Method
- Add all the ingredients to a high-speed food processor and blitz until combined.
- Roll the mixture into bite-sized balls and refrigerate until they are no longer sticky to touch.
- Garnish with your favourite toppings (picture: shredded coconut) and enjoy whenever you need a protein-packed snack!

2. Build Your Plate Around Protein
At many social events, BBQs, parties, and/or shared dinners, you’re often able to build your own plate. When that’s the case, start with protein.
Protein helps stabilise blood sugar, supports muscle recovery, and keeps you feeling satisfied for longer. Once you’ve added your protein source, fill the rest of your plate with salads, vegetables and whole grains where available (think rice, wholegrain bread, pasta).
This approach naturally creates balance without needing to overthink it. You can still enjoy your favourite foods, but anchoring your meal with protein helps you feel energised rather than sluggish.

3. Eat (a little) Before You Arrive
It might seem logical to “save up” for a big event by eating very little beforehand, but this often backfires.
Arriving overly hungry can make it harder to tune into portion sizes and body cues. Decision-making becomes reactive rather than intentional.
Instead, have a small, balanced snack before you go. Something with protein and fibre like yoghurt and fruit, a protein smoothie, a slice of Happy Way Protein Banana Bread or a handful of nuts can take the edge off without spoiling your appetite.
When you’re not starving, you’re far more likely to eat in a way that feels good both physically and mentally.
4. Tune Into Your Body Cues

Social events can be distracting in the best way. You’re chatting, laughing, sipping and grazing - sometimes without realising how full you are.
Try to gently check in with yourself throughout the event. Are you still hungry? Are you comfortably full? Are you eating because you’re enjoying it, or simply because it’s sitting right in front of you?
There’s no need for rigid rules. Just awareness. If you notice you’re satisfied, give yourself permission to stop. If you genuinely want more, enjoy it mindfully.
Honouring your body cues is one of the most powerful nutrition skills you can build.
5. Remember the Big Picture
Nutrition at social events isn’t about restriction or missing out. It’s about priorities and choices.
One meal, one party, or one weekend will not derail your progress. What matters most is your overall pattern, what you do consistently, not occasionally.
Summer is meant to be enjoyed. Food is part of culture, connection and celebration. With a little planning and awareness, you can embrace both your social life and your wellbeing.
When you focus on balance over perfection, summer events become a lot less overwhelming. A little planning, a little protein, and tuning into your body can go a long way. You can enjoy the season and still feel good in yourself, because you can absolutely have both.
