LET’S CLEAR THE AIR ABOUT BOVAER®
There’s been a whole lot of buzz on social media lately about a dairy feed additive called Bovaer®, and it’s got people talking (some good, some not-so-good). So, let’s set the record straight! In this blog, we’ll dive into all the buzz around Bovaer®, why it’s not on Aussie farms just yet, and how the dairy industry is prioritising innovation, safety, and transparency.
Bovaer®, also referred to as 3-Nitrooxypropanol (or 3-NOP for short), has been in the works for over a decade, thanks to Dutch innovators DSM-Firmenich. It’s specifically designed for cows (and other farm animals like sheep, goats, and deer) to help reduce methane production by targeting the enzyme in their stomachs responsible for it.
The result? Less methane produced in a cow’s stomach. Due to growing popularity, this additive is authorised and available for sale in 55+ countries.
IS BOVAER® AVAILABLE DOWN UNDER?
-
Bovaer® (3-NOP) is approved in Australia and several other countries. However, its use on Australian dairy farms is currently non-existent.
-
Why? Mainly due to high costs and logistical challenges around distribution.
Right now, there’s no evidence of Bovaer® being used on Aussie dairy farms. If you’ve been following the conversation, you might have come across Rumin8, a local Climate Tech company working on methane-reducing solutions. However, Rumin8 is still in development and not yet commercially available in Australia.
Since December 4, online conversation has shifted from Bovaer® to Rumin8, which has been wrongly referred to as the "Australian version" of Bovaer®. Rumin8 is indeed an Aussie company focused on methane-reducing feed additives, but it’s still in the research and development phase, so it’s not ready for sale just yet.
DOES IT AFFECT OUR PROTEIN?
Bovaer® is not used in the production of our protein powders. Our products are sourced from Australian dairy farms, and there is no evidence of Bovaer® in their feed practices. Rest assured, our commitment to safety and quality ensures the highest standards in every product we offer.
WHAT ABOUT OTHER DAIRY PRODUCTS?
Although the Australian dairy industry is largely built on science and transparency. The industry remains committed to providing consumers with clear, honest information about their products and how they're made.
The industry adheres to strict guidelines that ensure all Australian dairy products meet the highest safety and quality standards. These guidelines cover every stage of the production chain, from the farm to your table, meaning all additives, processes, and technologies are carefully assessed and approved by regulatory authorities.
