SPRING INTO BETTER ENERGY: 5 SIMPLE NUTRITION HABITS TO FEEL YOUR BEST

SPRING INTO BETTER ENERGY: 5 SIMPLE NUTRITION HABITS TO FEEL YOUR BEST

Spring is here, the days are getting longer and there’s something about the change of season that makes you want to hit refresh on your routines.

But feeling your best doesn’t mean completely overhauling your diet or committing to a list of restrictive rules. Sometimes, it’s the simple habits you repeat every day that make the biggest difference.

Hi, I’m Heidi, a nutritionist and the founder of Heidi Rose Nutrition. These are five simple habits I recommend focusing on this spring to help you feel nourished, energised and ready for the day ahead.

1. START YOUR DAY WITH A BALANCED BREAKFAST

Breakfast doesn't have to be complicated, but it should give your body enough fuel to get you through the morning. A balanced breakfast is a great opportunity to combine protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats to create a satisfying meal.

Think:

  • Eggs on sourdough or wholegrain toast with avocado
  • Greek yoghurt with berries, nuts, seeds and a drizzle of honey
  • Overnight oats made with milk, chia seeds, berries and protein powder
  • A smoothie with banana, berries, milk and your favourite Happy Way protein

If mornings are busy, Happy Way protein powder can be an easy addition to smoothies, oats or pancakes. With whey and plant-based options available, you can choose what works best for you.

The goal isn't to create the “perfect” breakfast. It's to make breakfast a regular part of your routine and choose foods that leave you feeling satisfied.

2. MAKE HYDRATION PART OF YOUR ROUTINE

As the weather starts to warm up, it's easy to forget about hydration until you're already thirsty. Rather than trying to drink a huge amount of water at the end of the day, make hydration something you do consistently throughout the day.

Try:

  • Starting your morning with a glass of water
  • Keeping a water bottle beside you while you're working
  • Having a glass of water with each meal
  • Taking water with you when you're heading out for a walk or workout
  • Adding lemon, lime or fresh mint if you prefer a little flavour

And remember, hydration doesn't have to mean drinking plain water all day. Water-rich foods, herbal teas and sparkling water can also contribute to your overall fluid intake. Happy Way also has protein water and electrolyte options that can be convenient around exercise and active days.

3. ADD A SIDE OF NON-STARCHY VEGETABLES TO DINNER

You don't need to completely change your dinner to eat more vegetables. One of my  favourite simple habits is to keep your usual meal and add a generous serve of non starchy vegetables alongside it.

Think:

  • Broccoli or broccolini
  • Zucchini
  • Capsicum
  • Green beans
  • Asparagus
  • Spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Cauliflower
  • Leafy greens

Having a colourful variety of vegetables throughout the week is a simple way to increase your intake of fibre and a range of vitamins and minerals.

And don't overthink it. Fresh, frozen, roasted, steamed or stir-fried all count. If you're short on time, frozen vegetables can be one of the easiest ways to get more variety onto your plate without adding another complicated step to your evening.

4. COOK DINNER WITH TOMORROW'S LUNCH IN MIND

Want to make healthy lunches easier? Cook a little extra at dinner.

When you're preparing your evening meal, make an extra serve or two and put it straight into a container for tomorrow's lunch. It's such a simple habit, but it can save you from standing in front of the fridge at 12pm wondering what you're going to eat.

Some easy dinner-to-lunch options include:

  • Chicken and vegetable stir-fry with rice
  • Beef or turkey mince bowls
  • Salmon with roasted vegetables and potatoes
  • Chicken curry with rice
  • Frittata with salad
  • Burrito bowls with beans, chicken, rice and vegetables

You can also keep a few easy Happy Way options on hand for those days when meal prep hasn't gone according to plan. Happy Way's Protein powder can be added to smoothies or oats, while protein snacks can be a convenient option to keep in your desk or bag. Your future self will thank you.

5. DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOUR STARVING

This is one of the simplest ways to make eating well feel easier. When you're incredibly hungry, it's much harder to think about what your body actually needs. You're more likely to grab whatever is quickest and easiest and there's nothing wrong with that occasionally, but constantly getting to the point of “I need food NOW” can make your day feel much harder. Instead, plan ahead with balanced meals and snacks.

If you know you have a busy afternoon, pack a snack before you leave the house. If you have back-to-back meetings, make sure you've eaten beforehand. And if you know you're going to be home late, have something easy ready to go.

Some simple snack ideas include:

This isn't about eating constantly or eating when you're not hungry. It's about not ignoring your hunger for hours and then expecting yourself to make thoughtful food choices when you're absolutely ravenous. A little planning can go a long way.

SMALL HABITS, BIG DIFFERENCE

You don't need a complete nutrition overhaul this spring.

Start with one or two habits that feel realistic for you. Maybe it's eating breakfast before your first coffee, keeping a water bottle on your desk, adding vegetables to dinner, preparing tomorrow's lunch while you cook dinner, or keeping a nourishing snack in your bag.

Healthy eating isn't about being perfect. It's about building simple habits that fit into your real life, and making nourishing yourself feel easier, not harder.
