Do you find yourself feeling flat, unmotivated, and hitting the “stuff it” button throughout winter. Only to promise yourself you’ll get back into your “healthy routine” in spring?
I see this all the time with my clients, and I’ve been there myself too. As a nutritionist working with women on their energy, metabolism and hormones, winter is one of the biggest times I see people fall into that all-or-nothing cycle.
Less motivation, more comfort foods, and the feeling of “I’ll just start again later.” But instead of writing the whole season off, this is actually an opportunity to support your body differently.
Let’s unpack why this happens with certified nutritionist Heidi Rose, and how you can incorporate Happy Way into your routine so you can feel your best this winter.
WHY WINTER CAN IMPACT YOUR MOOD & ENERGY
There are a few key reasons:
- Less sunlight → impacts your body clock, mood, and sleep.
- Colder weather → you naturally crave more comforting, energy-dense foods.
- Routine shifts → less movement, more time indoors, less structure.
This combination can leave you feeling sluggish, craving sugar, and disconnected from your usual habits. But the goal isn’t to fight winter, it’s to work with it.
1. Start your day with warming, nourishing meals
If it’s cold outside and you’re starting your day with a smoothie, it might not be hitting the mark. In winter, your body often responds better to warm, grounding meals that support satiety and energy.
How to make Protein Oats:
- ⅓ cup oats
- ½ cup milk of choice
- 2 tbsp Happy Way Vanilla Protein Powder
- 1 tbsp hemp seeds or ¼ cup nuts
- Frozen berries
- Sprinkle of cinnamon
- Optional: drizzle of maple syrup

This gives you protein + fibre + healthy fats → helping stabilise energy and reduce cravings throughout the day.
Quick option: Use Happy Way Whey Protein Quick Oats and top with Greek yoghurt, nuts, and berries or stewed apple for a warming, balanced breakfast.

2. Swap cold meals for warming lunches
Winter is not the time for cold salads that leave you unsatisfied. Warm meal can feel more satisfying and help reduce that afternoon slump and constant snacking.
Instead, think:
- Chicken & vegetable soup
- Leftovers warmed up
- Stir-fries or grain bowls
- Slow-cooked meals
3. Prioritise sleep (your winter superpower)

With less daylight, your body naturally leans towards more rest, and this is something to lean into, not ignore.
Support your sleep by:
- Going to bed and waking at similar times
- Dimming lights at night
- Reducing late-night scrolling
- Creating a simple wind-down routine
Because poor sleep doesn’t just affect energy, it also drives cravings, mood, and decision-making the next day.
4. Create a simple evening routine
Winter is the perfect time to slow things down in the evening. Instead of pushing through, use this season to create a routine that helps your body switch off.
Think:
- Warm shower or bath
- Changing into comfy clothes or your dressing gown
- Stepping away from screens
- Slowing your pace
A simple ritual you actually look forward to can make all the difference.A warm hot chocolate made with Happy Way's Collagen Hot Choccy Powder can be a really nice way to signal to your body that it’s time to relax.

It contains ingredients like magnesium, glycine and calming herbs, which can support relaxation as part of your evening routine.
Whether you’re sitting on the couch or winding down after a bath it’s about creating consistency, not perfection.
5. Get natural light early (even if it’s cold)
Within 30–60 minutes of waking, try to get outside — even for 5–10 minutes.
This helps:
- Support your body clock
- Improve mood
- Boost energy throughout the day
Even a short walk or standing outside with your coffee counts.
6. Stay connected (even when you don’t feel like it)

When it’s cold, it’s easy to withdraw, but connection is key for both mood and consistency.
Think:
- Joining a run club, Pilates class, or gym
- Locking in sessions with a friend
- Keeping small routines that get you out of the house
This isn’t just about exercise, it’s about accountability, community, structure, and feeling good.
Winter isn’t the time to throw it all away and “start again later.” It’s a chance to slow down, support your body differently, and build habits that actually last. Because how you show up in winter… is what carries you into spring.
