Everything you need to know about vegan protein

Protein is a vital part of your body’s daily functioning and should be an essential part of your diet, but for people on a vegan diet who don’t consume traditional sources of protein such as eggs, meat, and milk, protein has to come from plant sources. Vegan protein is a great alternative for those wanting to try protein supplements without consuming meat or dairy products!

Common Types of Vegan Protein Powder

  • Soy Protein

Soy protein is the most popular type of vegan protein. It comes from processed soy flour – which is highly soluble in water -  and is processed to be composed of at least 90% protein. Since fats, carbs and other non-protein components are removed, soy protein has a neutral taste that’s easy to blend with other ingredients.

  • Pea Protein

The field peas that are used to make pea protein powder contain almost quadruple the amount of protein than sweet peas. Starch and fibre are removed from the peas so that the pea protein powder is about 80% protein. Since pea protein is free from dairy, egg, and soy which are common allergens, it’s the perfect choice for both vegans and people with allergies. 

  • Brown Rice Protein

Without any sugar added, brown rice protein is low in carbohydrates and when it’s processed, over 80% of the starch content is taken out. Rice protein is also a great option for those with allergies because it doesn’t contain any lactose or gluten and ingredients that cause gastric issues.

  • Hemp Protein

Hemp protein is a complete protein – meaning it contains the nine essential amino acids that your body is unable to produce. Since the seeds are ground and minimally processed, hemp protein powder contains more nutrients but less protein per serving. However, hemp protein contains a larger amount of omega fatty acids and fibre than most other proteins and has a light, nutty flavour that makes it easy to consume.

Give Vegan Protein Powder a Try

Vegan protein powder is a very convenient, effective way to consume a blend of different plant-based proteins that make up complete proteins and bring a range of nutrients to your diet. Keep in mind, a mix of different vegan proteins can also give you a smoother shake. For those on a vegan diet or simply allergic to traditional sources of protein, choosing a plant-based source of protein on its own or opting for a blend of proteins is the answer.
