  1. Nuts

Nuts are a great source of fibre, healthy fats, protein, vitamins and minerals and are a simple and easy snack at any time of the day. It is recommended by the Australian Infant Feeding Guidelines that nuts and seeds be introduced to children as early as six months old in the form of butters or pastes to avoid choking. A nut or trail mix with seeds and dried fruit is a great healthy snack with nutritional benefits.

I asked Happy Way nutritionist, Malissa Fedele, for some of her tips and reasons behind the importance of feeding your kids healthy, nutritious snacks.

Why is it important to have healthy snack options for kids instead of overly processed foods?

  • Overly processed foods and drinks are rich in artificial colours, flavours, sugars and preservatives and are generally higher in fats and calories also.
  • These types of foods can not only spike blood sugar levels but also lead to inconsistencies in energy levels too with overconsumption potentially developing into further health issues such as weight gain.
  • Growing bodies need nourishment through nutritious whole foods.
  • It is essential to ensure your child’s diet is rich in foods that are REAL and free from any nasty preservatives, chemicals and processed sugars.
  • Wholesome, healthy snacks are rich in macro and micronutrients, which will give your children the nutrients they need.

  • What can be some mental/physical side effects if kids don’t eat healthy snacks?

  • Health complications such as insulin resistance, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.
  • Mental side effects can include anxiety, low moods and depleted energy levels.
  • Many store bought snacks and sweet treats have lots of hidden sugars and nasties added that can be detrimental to children’s health, that’s why healthy, home-made is always best.

  • You have two adorable nieces, what are some of your favourite snacks to make with them and how much fun do you have cooking together?

My nieces and I love to get in the kitchen and make lots of delicious snacks! Cooking with kids is such a great way to educate them on foods, nutrients and what real foods look like. It’s a great way to introduce new fruits, veggies and other whole foods into their diet. I find that children are way more excited and keen to try new foods when they have cooked/prepared it themselves. A favourite in my kitchen is smoothies, protein balls and easy little treats like chocolate crackles and muffins!

Making your own sweet treats and snacks at home from scratch is the best way to ensure that you know exactly what is going into your recipes and more importantly, your kids little bodies—and be sure to make a few sneaky extras for yourself too!
