Protein FAQs

What is protein powder?

Protein shake powder is a health supplement that’s frequently used by athletes, bodybuilders, those that frequently work out and even individuals looking to increase their daily protein intake. The protein is sourced from either animal or plant foods and can vary in concentration and benefits. There are different forms of clean protein powder in Australia which include:

  • Protein concentrate – made up of roughly 70-80% protein, protein concentrate is often considered to have the best flavour and consistency. It also consists of some carbs and fats as it’s been through less processing than isolate, which can often make it a more affordable protein. Protein concentrate is also believed to contain more nutrients which help to boost immunity.

  • Protein isolate – has a higher level of protein (roughly 90% or more) with lower levels of carbs and fat, however, it’s not as high in nutrients as protein concentrate. Whey isolate is good for people with lactose intolerances as during its processing stage a lot of the carbs and fats are removed, which can make it easier for those with lactose sensitivities to digest.

  • Protein hydrolysate – this form of protein digests rapidly and is absorbed quickly into the body as it’s broken down during production with the help of enzymes and acids. Protein hydrolysate is good for people with digestive problems and for performing athletes as its absorption rate helps with muscle recovery and stamina. Whey hydrolysate is considered the most expensive of the three proteins and can also tend to have more of a bitter taste compared to protein concentrate and isolate.

At Happy Way, our whey protein powder is made with protein concentrate, and our vegan varieties are made with protein concentrate and isolate.

How do I use protein powder to gain muscle?

To get the most out of a protein powder supplement, It’s important to understand the best way to use it and when, so you gain the maximum benefits and achieve your health and fitness goals. For muscle growth, you need to eat more protein than your body naturally breaks down during weight lifting and resistance training.

Depending on your health, weight and body type, quantities can vary. However, as a guide, we recommend adding 30 grams or more of protein powder to your protein shake, smoothie or favourite recipe.

People often ask if they should have protein before or after a workout. To aid in muscle growth, we recommend consuming protein powder within 30 minutes post-workout. Doing so will also encourage muscle tissue repair and regeneration. Protein powder is great for muscle growth, however, it’s not just for professional bodybuilders and athletes. Everyone should integrate enough protein into their diets for optimal health and well-being.

There are many protein powders to choose from. Have a read of our blog ‘Best Protein Powder Types & Flavours’ and to familiarise yourself with how to use protein powder to gain muscle, we recommend checking out our blog, ‘Does drinking protein shakes help build muscle for women?’.

How do I use protein powder?

Protein powder is a super simple supplement to use and can be easily added to your daily diet. It has a good consistency which allows it to mix well, and when flavoured it has a delicious taste, making it ideal in shakes, smoothies and snacks.

To make a protein shake, combine 30 grams of your favourite protein powder in a shaker, add 250 ml of water or your milk of choice and shake well to mix. How is protein powder made?

Whey is sourced from the watery part of milk that’s found during cheese production when the solid parts (casein) separate from the liquid. When the whey is separated, it goes through a development period where it’s broken down and essentially becomes whey protein in a powder form. You can see whey when you open up a tub of yoghurt and the watery liquid is sitting on top of the yoghurt—that’s whey. Once the whey is converted into a powder it’s then often flavoured into popular vanilla or chocolate type flavours, amongst others, which then makes it ideal to mix into shakes, smoothies, or snacks and other meals.

Vegan-friendly protein powder can be sourced from many different plant-based ingredients such as soy, hemp, rice or pea. With vegan protein powders, there’s often a blend of two protein sources, which when combined increases the levels of amino acids—this is because on their own they usually don’t contain the same amount that you will find in a whey protein powder. Plant-based proteins go through a similar developmental process to whey protein and are then flavoured to be used in recipes.

We use a range of organic and superfood ingredients in our protein powders including organic chia seeds, organic psyllium husk, organic maca powder and organic Himalayan rock salt. Happy Way loves the organic way because the ingredients are in their truest form and are bursting with nutrients that haven’t been covered with chemicals.

Are there different types of protein powder?

Yes, there are many variations available and the first thing to consider is what your dietary requirements are, and if you’re looking for an animal or plant-based protein supplement. Protein powders available include:

  • Protein whey powder
  • casein
  • collagen
  • rice
  • pea
  • hemp
  • soy
  • egg

To help you choose the best protein powder for you we recommend speaking with a healthcare professional. For further information on the different types available, read our blog, ‘Best Protein Powder Types & Flavours’.

Are there any side effects of using protein powder?

Incorporating a whey or vegan protein powder into your diet is a great way to ensure you’re getting the necessary daily requirements of protein. For those individuals who are lactose intolerant or have problems digesting protein, having whey protein concentrate may cause symptoms of stomach cramps, bloating or diarrhea, especially if taken in high dosages. Alternatively, they could try a plant-based protein supplement or even whey isolate rather than whey concentrate, as it contains a smaller amount of lactose. Buy whey protein powder today.

Can I use protein in my meal prepping?

Our protein powders are perfect for meal prep because they can be easily incorporated into recipes ahead of time without losing their nutritional benefits. You can add them to baked goods like muffins, pancakes, or protein bars for grab-and-go snacks, or stir them into overnight oats, chia pudding, or smoothie packs ready to blend. Just store prepared items in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer to keep them fresh.

Is protein powder safe for children?

Whilst children should be able to get a sufficient amount of protein through their diet, it is safe to give children protein powder. Some reasons why you might look at including protein powder in your child’s diet is if they’re underweight, fussy with food, have issues with their metabolism or are vegan or vegetarian.

Of course, you want to ensure that the protein powder you’re giving your child is filled with lots of healthy vitamins, nutrients and no hidden nasties such as any artificial flavours, sweeteners or preservatives.

The daily protein recommendations for kids are:

  • Children aged between 4-9 years – 19 grams
  • Children aged between 9-13 years – 34 grams
  • Adolescent boys aged between 14-18 years – 52 grams
  • Adolescent girls aged between 14-18years –46 grams

Before giving children any health supplement, we highly recommend speaking with a healthcare professional for advice and to answer any questions or concerns.

At Happy Way, our range is 100% natural and packed with tonnes of goodness! They’re perfect for your kids to enjoy in a smoothie, or to add to snacks like protein balls or baked goods for a delicious yet healthy treat.

Can I have whey protein powder if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

We’re often asked if our protein powders are safe for use during pregnancy. Happy Way’s range is safe to enjoy if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding but we recommend speaking with your doctor or healthcare professional before adding any health supplement to your daily diet. Not only do you want to ensure that you’re using a product with great nutritional value for you and your baby, but you also want to be confident that it’s made with all-natural ingredients and no hidden additives that can affect your health or that of your baby.

According to experts, pregnant women or women who are nursing should add an extra 25 grams of protein per day into their diets. This can present a challenge for some—that’s where Happy Way’s range comes in handy. By including Happy Way into their diets, pregnant women can get the extra protein that’s needed with minimal fuss. It’s easy to do—just add your favourite protein into smoothies, shakes, bliss balls and more.

  • Choose a protein powder that’s made with natural and organic ingredients.

  • Ensure that it’s filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which are all important to add to your diet

How long does protein powder last?

At Happy Way we recommend consuming your protein powders within 90 days of opening, to ensure product quality and freshness. Use the scoop provided and once opened, seal the bag and store it in a cool, dry place.

Is protein powder good for weight loss?

Using protein powder as a part of your daily diet can help you lose weight. Protein is considered the most hunger reducing macronutrient and can reduce your cravings and need for snacks quite significantly. Some people believe that this is even more apparent in vegan protein powders than in whey protein.

A protein powder that contains all 9 essential amino acids will also assist with controlling weight as they’re absorbed rapidly by the muscles in our bodies, rather than being broken down by the liver. This provides a great source of energy during exercise, enabling you to train for longer periods, resulting in the loss of weight and a decrease in fat.

Incorporating protein powder into your daily diet can help you to lose weight but it shouldn’t be looked at as a ‘magic powder’—it needs to be consumed along with a healthy diet and physical activity. Whilst a higher intake of protein can allow you to eat fewer calories and not leave you feeling hungry, having an excessive amount of protein and not burning calories through exercise can affect your weight-loss efforts.

What is whey protein?

Whey protein is considered one of the best sources of protein available as it contains all 9 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. It’s absorbed quickly in the body and therefore provides rapid benefits.

Casein and whey are the two proteins that are found in milk, with casein being 80% and whey, 20%. Whey is sourced from the watery part of milk that’s found during cheese production when the solid parts (casein) separate from the liquid. When the whey is separated during this process, it goes through a development period where it’s broken down and essentially becomes whey protein in a powder form.

You can see whey when you open up a tub of yoghurt and the watery liquid is sitting on top of the yoghurt—that’s whey. Once the whey is converted into a powder it’s then often flavoured into popular vanilla or chocolate type flavours, amongst others, which then make it ideal to mix into shakes, smoothies or snacks and other meals.

Whey protein powder, meanwhile, is a health supplement that provides great nutritional value and provides the body with many benefits. It’s a convenient way to ensure you’re getting the daily requirement of protein in your diet, as well as other vitamins and minerals that support healthy bodily function. Used in conjunction with a well-balanced diet and exercise program, our protein powder can help you reach your fitness goals, boost your energy levels and support your general health and well-being.

At Happy Way, our protein powders are made with the highest quality raw and organic superfood ingredients. They’re all-natural and full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, with no hidden preservatives, artificial flavours or additives.

For more info read our blog, ‘The 10 Best Whey Protein Powders’.

Can I mix protein powder and pre-workout?

Yes, you can take protein powder and pre-workout in the same day, but it’s best to consume them separately. Pre-workout is usually taken 20–30 minutes before training to boost energy and performance, while protein powder is most effective post-workout for muscle recovery. Mixing them together in the same drink isn’t harmful, but the flavours may not blend well.

Is whey protein vegan friendly?

Being that whey protein is sourced from cows milk during cheese production, it is not considered vegan. For those that are looking for a vegan-friendly protein, there are many plant-based options available including pea, hemp, rice and soy protein

To find out more about Happy Way’s vegan protein powders, check out our blog ‘Best Protein Powder Types & Flavours’ or see our selection of plant-based protein powders available here.

Is vegan protein powder better than whey protein powder?

Both whey and vegan protein offer nutritional benefits and help to boost energy, maintain muscle mass, improve strength and assist with weight management. Vegan protein is best if you follow a plant-based diet, being that whey protein is made from animal sources (milk). It’s for this reason that vegan protein can typically be lower in fat and calorie content than whey protein.

Using a vegan protein powder is great for individuals who are lactose intolerant or have issues with allergies as they can be easier to digest, promote overall gut health and help to boost metabolism.

Whey protein formulas have been considered better than plant-based protein in the past because they are considered complete proteins, meaning they contain the essential amino acids necessary for protein synthesis. However, at Happy Way, our vegan protein powders consist of a plant protein blend and contain all nine essential amino acids that are necessary for our diet, to help build and support muscle growth and repair.

What is vegan-friendly protein powder?

Vegan-friendly protein powder is made from a plant-based protein such as pea, rice, hemp or soy, as opposed to one that is made from dairy.

Converted into a powdered form, vegan protein supplements contain varying amounts of protein depending on where it’s sourced, the flavour, brand etc.

At Happy Way, our vegan protein powders contain either a plant protein blend of rice and pea protein or hemp protein. The combination of the two plant-based proteins provides higher quantities of certain essential amino acids which are required from our diet to maintain healthy bodily functions. Hemp protein also contains all 9 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein.

For a more detailed look at Happy Way’s range and the benefits of each plant-based protein powder, read our blog, ‘Best Protein Powder Types & Flavours’.

Is vegan protein powder safe to use when pregnant?

A question we’re regularly asked at Happy Way—‘Is vegan protein powder safe to use when pregnant?’.

This all depends on the powder you’re using and what ingredients it contains.

At Happy Way, all of our protein supplements are safe for both pregnant and breastfeeding women, as they’re all-natural, organic and packed with vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. We advise that you always check with your healthcare professional before using any supplement, including when you're pregnant and breastfeeding.

It’s said by experts that pregnant women or women who are nursing a newborn should consume a minimum of an additional 25 grams of protein per day. This can be challenging for some, especially when there are errands to run, appointments to attend and a little one to look after! Incorporating a plant based powder into your diet can help equip you with the vitamins and nutrients you need as well as provide you with a perfect on the go snack to enjoy throughout the day.
