FAQs

Are there different types of protein powders?

Yes, there are many variations available and the first thing to consider is what your dietary requirements are, and if you’re looking for an animal or plant-based protein supplement. These supplements are typically made from the following protein sources:

  • Protein whey powder
  • Casein
  • Collagen
  • Rice (yep, rice isn’t all carbs)
  • Pea
  • Hemp
  • Soy
  • Egg

Once you’ve decided what source works best for you, you can also choose among the processing methods below.

Concentrate

Made up of roughly 70-80% protein, protein concentrate is often considered to have the best flavour and consistency. It also consists of some carbs and fats as it’s been through less processing than isolate, which can often make it a more affordable protein. Protein concentrate is also believed to contain more nutrients which help to boost immunity.

Isolate

Has a higher level of protein (roughly 90% or more) with lower levels of carbs and fat, however, it’s not as high in nutrients as protein concentrate. Whey isolate is good for people with lactose intolerance as during its processing stage a lot of the carbs and fats are removed, which can make it easier for those with lactose sensitivities to digest.

Hydrolysate

This form of protein digests rapidly and is absorbed quickly into the body as it’s broken down during production with the help of enzymes and acids. Protein hydrolysate is good for people with digestive problems and for performing athletes as its absorption rate helps with muscle recovery and stamina.

Whey hydrolysate is considered the most expensive of the three proteins and can also tend to have more of a bitter taste compared to protein concentrate and isolate.

At Happy Way, our whey protein powders are made with protein concentrate, and our vegan varieties are made with protein concentrate and isolate.

While we strongly recommend speaking with a healthcare professional before choosing the right supplement for you, it always helps to do your own research. Here’s some more information on the different types of protein supplements to get you started.

What are the benefits of organic protein supplements?

Incorporating organic, protein-based fitness supplements into your daily diet can provide a lot of benefits for your body and mind.

Using these provides people with an easy and convenient way to increase their protein intake to ensure a well-balanced and nutritional diet. Women, men, athletes, sportspeople and bodybuilders alike use protein powder because it can assist with:

  • Muscle growth
  • Recovery
  • Weight management
  • Immunity protection

To know more, see our article on the benefits of BCAA powders.

What are the side effects of using this supplement?

Adding a protein supplement to your routine is a great way to meet your nutritional goals, but it is important to be aware of how your body might react. If you’re lactose intolerant, high doses of whey concentrate can lead to digestive discomfort like bloating, cramps, or diarrhea.

Anyone with general protein digestion issues or medical problems such as chronic kidney disease, gout, liver disease, or susceptibility to kidney stones should avoid protein supplements, unless cleared by a medical professional.

Consider your broader health goals; excessive protein intake without sufficient physical activity can hinder weight-loss efforts. From a clinical perspective, extremely high protein consumption may also place unnecessary strain on the kidneys or liver over time.

Additionally, many commercial varieties contain artificial additives, such as synthetic sweeteners or preservatives, which may disrupt gut health or cause metabolic sensitivity.

To minimize these risks, prioritize clean, 100% natural formulas. If you experience sensitivity, switching to a whey isolate or a plant-based blend, such as pea, rice, or hemp, can help.

Is this supplement safe for children?

Whilst children should be able to get a sufficient amount of protein through their diet, it is safe to give children protein supplements. Some reasons why you might look at including protein powder in your child’s diet is if they’re underweight, fussy with food, have issues with their metabolism or are vegan or vegetarian.

Of course, you want to ensure that what you’re giving your child is filled with lots of healthy vitamins, nutrients and has no hidden nasties such as any artificial flavours, sweeteners or preservatives. For more information on dosage and general use, see our article on protein supplementation safety for children.

Where do I buy protein supplements in Australia?

Here of course! At Happy Way, we have a fantastic selection of some of the best protein powder in Australia, so there’s bound to be a bunch that become your new favourites!

What is vegan protein powder?

Vegan-friendly protein powder is made from a plant-based protein such as pea, rice, hemp or soy, as opposed to one that is made from dairy.

Converted into a powdered form, vegan protein supplements contain varying amounts of protein depending on where it’s sourced, the flavour, brand etc. At Happy Way, our plant based protein powder in Australia contains either a plant protein blend of rice and pea protein or hemp protein.

The combination of the two plant-based proteins provides higher quantities of certain essential amino acids which are required from our diet to maintain healthy bodily functions. Hemp protein also contains all 9 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein.

How do I choose the right protein supplement for me?

Consider what’s best for your body and diet, but also what aligns with your fitness goals and lifestyle. If you’re on a vegan diet, then naturally you would choose a plant-based protein over whey, and this can be the same for those who have intolerances to dairy or gluten products.

Asking yourself some initial questions about what you’re trying to achieve will help you determine the best option:

  • Are you aiming to build strength and muscle?
  • Are you aiming to lose weight?
  • Or are you simply looking to increase your intake of protein?

For personalised advice, we recommend speaking with a healthcare professional before adding any health supplement into your diet. Our customer support team is also available to answer any questions you may have about our products.

How is protein powder made?

Whey is sourced from the watery part of milk that’s found during cheese production when the solid parts (casein) separate from the liquid. When the whey is separated, it goes through a development period where it’s broken down and essentially becomes whey protein in a powder form.

You can see whey when you open up a tub of yoghurt and the watery liquid is sitting on top of the yoghurt. That’s whey. Once the whey is converted into a powder it’s then often flavoured into popular vanilla or chocolate type flavours, amongst others, which then makes it ideal to mix into shakes, smoothies, or snacks and other meals.

Vegan-friendly powder can be sourced from many different plant-based ingredients such as soy, hemp, rice or pea. With vegan protein powders, there’s often a blend of two protein sources, which when combined increases the levels of amino acids.

That’s because on their own they usually don’t contain the same amount that you will find in a whey protein. Plant-based proteins go through a similar developmental process to whey protein and are then flavoured to be used in recipes.

What are the ingredients?

Our whey and vegan protein products are 100% natural and filled with high-quality raw superfoods, natural vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They’re also made without any artificial flavours, preservatives or sweeteners.

Our whey protein is sourced from NZ pasture-fed cows, using a combination of certified organic and organically grown ingredients and is also considered gluten-free. At Happy Way, we make several of our vegan powders with a plant-based blend of rice and pea protein and others are made with hemp protein.

Some of the other ingredients we use include:

  • Coconut flour: Better digestion and heart health.
  • Chia seeds: Antioxidant goodness.
  • Psyllium husk: Weight control and general intestinal health.
  • Maca: Increased libido, boosting energy and endurance.
  • Stevia leaf: Plant-based sugar substitute.
  • Himalayan rock salt: Increased strength.

We take pride in securing a certified five-star health rating for our protein supplements. Our products are ideal for people of all ages, including pregnant women and breastfeeding mums.

Are these supplements shelf stable?

At Happy Way we recommend consuming your protein supplements within 90 days of opening, to ensure product quality and freshness. Use the scoop provided and once opened, seal the bag and store it in a cool, dry place.

Does it promote weight loss?

Using it as a part of your daily diet can help you lose weight. Protein is considered the most hunger reducing macronutrient and can reduce your cravings and need for snacks quite significantly. Some people believe that this is even more apparent in vegan protein powders than in whey protein.

A powder that contains all 9 essential amino acids will also assist with controlling weight as they’re absorbed rapidly by the muscles in our bodies, rather than being broken down by the liver. This provides a great source of energy during exercise, enabling you to train for longer periods, resulting in the loss of weight and a decrease in fat.

Incorporating it into your daily diet can help you to lose weight but it shouldn’t be looked at as a “magic powder”. It needs to be consumed along with a healthy diet and physical activity.

Whilst a higher intake of protein can allow you to eat fewer calories and not leave you feeling hungry, having an excessive amount of protein and not burning calories through exercise can affect your weight-loss efforts.

How do I use it to gain muscle?

For muscle growth, you need to eat more protein than your body naturally breaks down during weight lifting and resistance training.

Depending on your health, weight and body type, quantities can vary. However, as a guide, we recommend adding 30 grams or more to shake, smoothie or favourite recipe.

People often ask if they should have protein before or after a workout. To aid in muscle growth, we recommend consuming it within 30 minutes post-workout. Doing so will also encourage muscle tissue repair and regeneration.

Can I consume protein supplements if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes, our protein supplements are safe to consume if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding but we recommend speaking with your doctor or healthcare professional before adding any health supplement to your daily diet.

Not only do you want to ensure that you’re using a product with great nutritional value for you and your baby, but you also want to be confident that it’s made with all-natural ingredients and no hidden additives that can affect your health or that of your baby.

According to experts, pregnant women or women who are nursing should add an extra 25 grams of protein per day into their diets.

Can I add it to my food?

Definitely. Our powders are incredibly versatile and can be added to a wide variety of foods to boost your daily protein intake. You can mix them into oatmeal, yoghurt, smoothie bowls, bliss balls, pancakes, muffins, or even savoury recipes where a hint of flavour works. Here are some tips:

  1. Baking: Replace a small portion of flour in recipes like muffins, cookies, or pancakes with protein powder.
  2. Breakfast bowls: Stir into oats, yoghurt, or chia pudding after cooking or soaking.
  3. Snacks: Blend into bliss balls, protein bars, or smoothie bowls.
  4. Soups & savoury dishes: Add our unflavoured protein powder to soups or stews for an invisible protein boost.

Our protein powders are also perfect for meal prep because they can be easily incorporated into recipes ahead of time without losing their nutritional benefits.

Is it okay to mix pre-workout with creatine and protein?

You can combine all three, but timing matters for best results:

  • Pre-workout + Creatine: Fine to take together before training. Note our Pre-workout powder contains 0.3g per serve.
  • Protein: Best consumed after your workout for recovery.

While there’s no safety issue in mixing them, most people prefer to separate pre-workout from protein for taste and optimal nutrient timing.

Do creatine and protein mix?

Yes. Creatine and protein work well together to support muscle growth, strength, and recovery. You can mix creatine into your protein shake post-workout for convenience. It won’t affect absorption or effectiveness as long as it’s taken consistently.

Can I mix this with collagen powder?

Yes, you can mix with collagen powder for combined benefits. If you use Happy Way’s whey protein water with added collagen, you’re already getting the benefits in one formula. Otherwise, you can blend both powders into shakes, smoothies, or recipes. Keep in mind collagen is also a protein so you might want to keep in mind total protein intake.
